Match Report - 8th June 2019
Saturday the 8th saw the G4L team host Naunton Downs at home.
The day started in a weird way. Arriving at the 19th early I found Nic Pomeroy in conversation with John Cleese about the cricket on TV. An everyday event I think you will agree. I was told by Mark in the Pro shop about the upcoming PGA games the Hotel has secured and by the way Simon, you will be presenting the trophy next year. Gulp!
Fiona, our Lady Captain joined us for brunch and supported us throughout the day along with Nigel Fletcher. I'd like to thank both for their support and for sticking out the cold wind to cheer us on.
I'd also like to give a huge SHOUT OUT to Ben Hall. One of our number was missing and being on holiday had no access to emails (like myself - bliss) and had no idea he had been picked. Ben was on the property with his clubs and filled in with minutes to go. Thankyou Ben.
The score. Wind and rough 2 - golfers nil.
Seriously though I played with Vic Coles and we ran away 11 -7 with Vic tearing a large hole in Par on the back 9. Whenever the opposition looked like taking a hole off us Vic would just drop a 40 footer quite casually. Love playing with you, always my highlight of the year. Our 2nd pairing of Frank Nolan & Ronan Deasy were just edged out 8.5 - 9.5 I understand Frank was quite sober and plays better with a couple on board, next match fire a couple in Captain! The 3rd group of Nic Pomeroy and Ben Hall had quite a battle too and lost 8 -10. Mike Peters & Andy Murphy could not make headway against a gentleman who shot well below his handicap on the back 9 giving our boys no chance. The last 2 pairings of Ben Davies & Stuart Mcleod with lastly Neil Smith & Gavin Offord steaded the ship with 9 - 9 draws each. Gavin took the nearest the pin on 7 meaning Tewkesbury boys have won all 3 so far.
The team lost narrowly 52.5 - 55.5
I'd like to say at this point how proud I am of the team. Despite coming up against some players today who shot well below their handicaps there wasn't a single grumble, in fact our opposition was congratulated by all on their play.

Match Report - 1st June 2019
The G4L team paid a visit to Rodway Hill this week. After a mauling at Minchinhampton the team was keen to get a result.
Hardly any of the team had played Rodway before and contrary to the negative reviews we had heard about the course it was in excellent shape. The greens were great, soft, true and quick. The bunkers had lot's of sand in them. I know - I visited the vast majority of them! The course itself is interesting with a variety of challenges to keep you thinking and the views from the higher part of the course were stunning.
The team won 60 points to 48 with some outstanding scoring. Simon Letts had 4 birdies, that boy is on FIRE! Winning with myself 11-7. Ben Davies and Geoff Lane managed to hang onto a big hitting opponent and only just lost 9.5 - 8.5 which is a great effort. Nigel Fletcher and Phil Hall also won 11-7 with this being Nigel's first appearence in the 0-12 category that is a great result. Scott Bridges and Andy Murphy hit a brick wall in their match and lost 10.5-7.5. Frank Nolan and Gavin Offord also took a win 9.5 - 8.5. I'm sure they would have done better if our Captain had not carried his bag up and down, up and down the hill all day! Get your battery charged!
Finally Andy Quinn and John Taylor had a runaway day. Andy was playing out of his category and was reduced to 12 handicap on the day. But there is no holding back The Mighty Quinn! They ran out our biggest winners on the day 12.5 - 5.5. Very well done Andy and John. Brilliant stuff team! It puts us back in the race with 4 matches to go.

Match Report - 11th May 2019
Saturday the 11th saw the G4L team take to the road and head south to Minchinhampton Old Course.
The players were rotated yet again and some new faces played their first match after a healthy brunch. If you've never played the course it is a traditional old inland links dating from 1889. There are no bunkers but numorous humps and hollows around the greens to keep you honest. From the tee there is little to be seen of the holes as they slipped over a brow or some old earth ramparts built by who knows who or when. Each hole sets off in a different direction giving you a different wind off every tee. With panoramic views it's a lovely place to be. Especially if daisies and buttercups are your favourite flowers.
You will have noticed no mention of a score. I don't want to get to that bit.
The home team put up a very good fight, several of them going well under their handicap and very determined to win. Our lads did their best to hang onto their coat tails but with the vast majority of the team not seeing the course before or playing the type of golf required to make a score we were soundly beaten by the better side 64 - 44 points. The standout pairing of the day was Rob Halling and Ronan Deasy who managed a 9-9 half.
I have no doubt the team is looking forward to the home match and handing out what we took today.
Our next match is Saturday 1st of June away at Rodway Hill.

20th April 2019 - The Presidents Cup Match Report
Tewkesbury Park hosted Lilley Brook Golf Club in the Presidents Cup. The weather on the day was stunning. Beautiful blue skys and sunshine, a very light breeze and late April temperatures that saw the golfers wearing shirtsleeves which was a very pleasant change.

Tewkesbury Park fielded a strong team of 10 determined players that was a mixture of experience and welcome fresh faces to the Presidents Cup Foursomes format. This led to an excited and slightly nervous atmosphere on the first tee, but every team got away well and the first match of this years campaign was underway.
There was some welcome support from Tewkesbury Park members around the course and as Captain I learnt that after 5 holes we were up in 2 matches, level in 2 and down in one which was very promising. The standout news at that early stage being that new boys Ben Davies and Scott Bridges were 5 up after 5 (there does seem to be Mexican music in the background whenever they are playing ...). After 9 it was still in the balance with Tewkesbury Park being comfortably up in 2 but all other matches being level. As the back 9 progressed Tewkesbury Park home advantage and the competitiveness of our players started to prevail and after 13 we were up in 3, level in 1 and down in 1. A couple of the matches finished on 14 and 15 and the other 3 went down to the last couple of holes.

The final result was a Tewkesbury Park victory 4 matches to 1. Some notable performances on the day came from Ben Davies and Scott Bridges in their first Presidents Cup match with a 5&3 win and Frank Nolan for stepping into the team late in the day and then giving Stef Hunt the confidence to play really good golf against a strong pairing.
Thanks also go out to Mike Slatter (our very supportive President), Joey Guilder, Nigel Fletcher and Fiona Hudman for supporting around the course.

Match Report - 6th April 2019
Our second G4L match came straight on the heels of the first. Playing at home again we hosted our neighbours - Sherdons GC. The pairings were suitably rotated, players rested, new players brought in and I was back from injury, too soon as it happens. You know the saying 'beware the injured golfer' well this injured golfer couldn't hit his hat on the back 9. Sorry Richard, I let you down.
The players who did manage to turn up with a golf swing had a hard fought match in front of them. Frank Nolan and Vic Coles ham n egged perfectly for a 9-9 half. Neil Smith and Ben Hall also came in with a 9-9 half with Ben sinking the vital putt on the 18th. Poor Richard Rowe got a bad back carrying me, so sadly we lost. And then it got all rosy.
Ben Davies continued his good form and with Martin Allerton and took an impressive win 11.5-6.5. Rob Halling and Andy Murphy didn't just win, they ran away and hid from their opponents running out 13-5. Rob also took the bottle for nearest the pin on the 7th, dropping the ball to 4 feet. Scott Bridges and Phil Hall played the perfect anchor pairing and won the final match 10-8.
The team finished 60 points to 48, which is quite a good win. You've all earnt an extra sausage at the next brunch!
My thanks again to Fiona, our lady Captain, for showing up and supporting the team, it is appreciated by the team to see a friendly face on the 10th tee. I think for our next home match we should invite you in for brunch on us!
I think it's fair to say that everyone is enjoying this format, home and away players alike.
The team now have 5 weeks off before we go away to Minchinhampton Old Course. Let's take that form on the road lads. Well done!

31th March 2019
Owen Bond win the Corus Cup Bogey competition with a score of +3.

Match Report - 30th March 2019
The first G4L match took place on saturday at Tewkesbury Park. Rodway Hill were the guests and after a solid brunch headed for the 1st tee. A sunny day was awaiting the 2 teams and finally some firmness in the fairways to flatter their driving distances. All 6 pairings got away off the 1st, sadly some recording the very first lost ball in G4L. As I wasn't playing I watched the pairs go through the 5th (where we had a bottle on for nearest the pin) and then through the 10th. At the halfway stage Tewkesbury were down 3 and 2 halves vs 1 and 2 halves. A fightback was required and duly delivered. The first 2 results went 10-8 in favour of Rodway Hill and I'm looking worried but the middle of Tewkesburys batting order did their job and with the last game lost another 10-8 to Rodway Hill the match was halved 3 -3 with Tewkesbury just edging it on points 55.5 - 52.5
New friendships were made and there was a lot of laughter in the bar afterwards. We look forward to the return match and it's going to be tight season with this format.
The bottle was won by Ben Davies with a lovely iron shot to 6 feet.
The standout pairing was Nic Pomeroy and John Taylor who saved our bacon on points running out 11.5 - 6.5 winners. Nic hit the beans on toast on the 10th finishing a foot away from the hole but his tap in was only for a half. Rodway Hill had brought some very big hitting low handicappers and all pairings fought well for their points against the odds. I'm proud of the team and the determination they showed.
I'd like to put in a thankyou to our Lady Captain, Fiona, who held my worried hand as I looked on helpless while out injured.

30th July 2018 - The Presidents Cup (2nd Round)
Tee Time : 4pm
Course : Sherdons Golf Club
The prize, a place in the 2018 Pesidents Cup quarter-finals.
10 of the finest men Tewkesbury Park Golf Club has to offer took on the tricky course of Sherdons on a sunny and breezy evening. The course playing as well as I have seen it play and Sherdons offering opponents of all levels and experience made for a great contest all round.
Lots of friendly chat with old foes being re-united led to a fun and a thrilling evening.

However, Tewkesbury seemed to have the upper hand straight from the off with most groups leading by the half-way point, this did not change by the end of 18 holes.
A fantastic away victory of 4-1 and with a little controversy with the Tewkesbury loss could have been 5-0, and a match which went to the 22nd hole could've been finished a lot earlier if it wasn't for those pesky 3 feet putts. You know who you are ...
A great effort by all from the Tewkesbury Park Team and a little pride in a local derby win.

Many thanks again to those members who turned up to show their support to the team. It's appreciated by all the team.
Many Thanks.

12th June 2018 - The Presidents Cup (1st Round)
Tewkesbury Park hosted The Bristol Golf Club in our first round of this years Presidents Cup campaign 2018.
With nothing but positive comments from our visiting rivals the course was laid out in fine condition with a few challenging pins to test all our golf games to the limit.

Tewkesbury Park, fielding a side of a mix of experience and youth against the away side bringing only seasoned President Cup players, some with a very strong record.
The overall result was a very close affair yet we just managed to tip the scales in the home sides favour.
The end result being 3&2 in a very hard-fought match between 2 very equally sided teams.
In one match the golf was played to such a level there were 7 birdies and 1 eagle.
The final match had to go back down the first to play extra holes to get an overall result with the home team holing out for yet another birdie the away side only managed a par for the final point Tewkesbury Park needed for the win.
The course was great, the weather was great and the sportsmanship was great.
The whole team played great and the result was great.
Onwards and upwards.
Looking forward to the next match, 2nd Round draw to follow shortly ...

On a Final Note
A big thank you from all the Team to all who took the time to come and support, making the camaraderie on the night all the better and adding to the whole evening in a very positive light.

29th April 2017 - GGU County AMAM
Tewkesbury Park was well represented with 2 teams from 20.
The team of Mel Hadfield, Russull McNamara, and Alex Wiggins and the County Player who had only this year returned to golf from football, Alex Ward.
One of the first teams out and in, posted a score which was going to be difficult to match. During the course of the day two other scores came in that were close but not close enough.
The County players had a scratch competition which was good but if Alex Wiggins could have entered would have won it with his magnificent score of 66 gross, 3 strokes better than the scratch players.
Well done Alex, unfortunately it was not a qualifier. Well done to the team and to Tewkesbury Park. Join us again whenever you can.

9th October 2016 - The Presidents Cup Team Final
It gives me great pleasure to announce that Tewkesbury Park are Gloucestershire Presidents Cup Champions for 2016.

Five pairs travelled to Filton GC to take part in finals day. Long Ashton were the opponents in the semi-finals, all Tewkesbury pairings were giving shots and after a very close encounter and some excellent golf played by both teams TP came through a tough match by a score of 4-1. All eyes quickly turned to the other semi between Ross and The Bristol GC. I think everyone wanted to do battle with Ross again in a repeat of the 2014 final at Shirehampton. It was not to be The Bristol came through a close encounter with a narrow winning margin of 3-2.

After a short break for lunch and permission granted to Dave Allen to have one pint to settle the nerves the final commenced. Again TP giving away shots in all matches, TP were led out by Club Captain Brad Ainslie and Dave Allen who went down early and after a spirited fight back narrowly lost a closely fought match. Game two was Calum Dawes and myself, Calum continued his impressive form from the semi-final in which he played some of the best golf I have witnessed at amateur level which resulted in a 4&3 victory. Harry Sayers and Rob Halling finished A/S after 18 holes and headed off to the 19th hole. All attention was diverted to the 17th green to watch the remaining pairs of Josh Ainslie and Adam Gill and Gav Offord Neil Smith who both were holding on to narrow leads. The young guns ( not Neil and Gav) continued to embrace their impressive partnership throughout the competition to win their point putting Tewkesbury 2-1 up. Next up was the stubborn old guard of Neil and Gav, these two guys have been a rock at the back of the team all season, I admire the competiveness along with an burning desire to bring home the bacon for the team, and once more they achieved their goals with victory on the 17th.
WE DID IT!

It has been an honour for me to Captain this years PC team and a bunch of guys who are so keen to represent their club and do well for each other. I have played a lot of team sports over the years and can honestly say that the team spirit shown in this team by all players throughout the whole competition is by far the best I have experienced and I am very proud to be a part of that.

A huge thank you goes out to all the supporters who have been there in every round, rain or shine, it gives the team a massive boost and promotes the "never give up attitude" that this team has in abundance.

I hope as many of you as possible can attend this years county dinner which is being held at TP this to watch the trophy being presented for a third time.

It has truly been a pleasure, lets do it again next year.

Kind Regards

A very proud Team Captain - Simon Whitehall

The golfers compete for prestigious trophies including the Eden Trophy, presented by the former Town Council of St Andrews, the Duke of York Cup, presented in 1933 by the current Duke of York (won by Nic Pomeroy in 2004 & 2008), and the Victory Cup, presented in 1919 by Lt.
